What is STEM?

STEM is a curriculum based on four specific disciplines — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Rather than teaching the four disciplines separately, STEM integrates the four subjects areas into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.

How will our children benefit from a solid STEM education?

The demand for STEM-related jobs in Florida has increased more than 63 percent since 2010, and currently, there are more than 55,000 unfilled STEM jobs in Florida. According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, job growth in Florida is anticipated to be about 12 percent through 2021, with job growth in STEM disciplines more than double that. And because there is a lack of STEM education in Florida, there exists a STEM-skills gap that needs to be filled to keep up with the growing demand for STEM-related jobs.

While Florida's 4th-grade reading scores are second in the world, our children are falling behind in both math and science proficiency. That percentage is more than double in students at 8th-grade math level. According to the Nation's Report Card, students in Florida are ranked 29th in 4th-grade math, 35 in 8th-grade math, 26th in 4th-grade science, and 38th in 8th-grade science.
